The following was read by three of Trevor's best friends at his funeral
November 29,1996
If two words could describe Trevor Speed on the baseball field, it would be THE MOTIVATOR. Trevor's dream as well as ours was to win the state championship, it will be accomplished. This season took on a whole new meaning - it is dedicated to you. You will never leave the hearts of all of us. You were a leader of our team and everybody respected you. In the weightroom and in the pool, you were always pushing us to do more, encouraging us to get better. The power you brought to our lineup being clean-up hitter, and cleaning off the bases you did. The homerun you hit off the busbarn, the three you hit in Tennessee, and the homerun heard around the world - the bomb you hit in Birmingham. When you touched homeplate, you said you didn't get all of it, I would've hated to see what all of it was. The number 30 will never be worn again at Hattiesburg High School. Your other two jerseys will be hung in our locker room as well as a banner and two contracts saying what you always stressed - Work harder; Get better; Give it your all. You will be with us every step of the way this season. Your memory will never leave the hearts of all, and your legend will live on. Your baseball family will always love you, and never forget you. To some this interpretation of Trevor Speed's life maybe hard to understand. A 17 year old arm that would shake your hand, beat you up, or gave you a big hug when you needed it. This arm was always extended to all of his friends at any time. Trevor's life meant so much to so many people. In everything he did, he was the center of each situation. He seemed to bring so many people together. Whether it was helping a friend in need or crushing the big home run, he always seemed to come through. Trevor was respected and looked up to by many, but those who were close to him knew how big his heart was. Trevor lived the way he wanted to -everyday to the fullest. There was never a dull day with Trevor. He had all sorts of friends from all walks of life. Each knew him and will remember him in their own special way. To many, he was a brother. He would do anything for you. Trevor seemed to have a nose for trouble, but through any crisis, he seemed to find something positive. He motivated everyone to be everything they could be, supporting all of our talents to the fullest. Trevor gave the word "life" a whole new meaning. He was so incredible that it was hard to believe it, but he was for real. He seemed to teach everyone something or another about life. It is hard to make anything positive of this, but it is only fitting that he taught us the lesson no one will ever forget. We'll smile about the past and all the great times we had, and we dread a future without you. You will always be inside. From the bottom of our heart and with all the power we possess, we just want you to know how much we love you and how much your friendship meant to us. By: Scott Turner

Trev, more than anything, you know, that I would rather be in your place right now, but I don't have the power to do that. I'll miss the times we shared on and off the playing field. Times when we snuck out of your house and went roaming the streets of Hattiesburg. Times going down to the camp and runnin' over deer. I'll miss the time when we drove to Tennessee to visit Michelle, just you and me. There are so many things I want to say, but as you always told me, "Cuz, some things are better left unsaid." But Trev, I keep thinking about the promise that we made each other, "being there side by side through whatever happened, we would be together." I've thought about it alot in the last 2 days, and it's going to be very hard, but "Country boy's will survive." You will always be a legacy in my life and in lives of many others. I'll always love you Trev, and I'll see ya at the crossroads, but first I'm going to carry out your dream. You were the best friend I've ever had. I'll miss you more than words can say. 3 words, I LOVE YOU - Brett Conerly #35
